Michigan Governor to Visit White House on Tuesday

While normally this would not make big news, Gov. Jennifer Granholm is on the short list to be Obama's USSC Justice pick. The White House says that the visit is unrelated, but they always say that. I would not be surprised if he announces her nomination, but I would also not be surprised if he didn't. I still believe Sotomayor is a strong candidate. This visit could be a formal chat about the position as Obama narrows down his choices.

WASHINGTON – Gov. Jennifer Granholm will visit the White House on Tuesday amid speculation that she’s on President Barack Obama’s short list to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court but a senior administration official says the event is unrelated to the spot on the court.

What the event is and who else will be in attendance were not immediately revealed. The official was unwilling to be identified because the meeting and its topic had not yet been made public.

The Associated Press reported last week that Granholm’s name was on a short list to replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter, who is retiring. There were five other names on that list though the AP reported there may be more names under consideration.

Granholm’s staff has refused to comment on speculation that she might be under consideration for the job. A Harvard law school grad, Granholm was state attorney general before becoming governor. Unlike the other current members of the court, she does not have judicial experience.
