Free Republic: Never date a liberal!

An actual item at a FreeRepublic counterprotest. The intellectual prowess of these guys is remarkable, don't you think?

Over at the paranoid conspiracy theory web- I mean homely, patriotic right-wing discussion board Free Republic, I found an interesting post:

Sorry for the vanity, but I'm in serious need of some freeper advice here. I think I'm falling in love with a liberal. She's beautiful and has a big heart, but we have conflicting political ideologies. Does anyone have any tips for being in a relationship like that? Thanks FRiends...

Here's a small sample of the sort of reactions this guy received:

Yes. If you can’t convert her walk away. Save yourself the grief and heartbreak that will inevitably follow.

I’m sorry but you’ll have to shoot her. Just kidding. Right now,
you think it won’t be a problem, but wait a few years. You’ll
be surprised how annoyed you’ll feel. Unless, she’ll come ‘round to your
way of thinking.

IMHO, run for your life!! LOL...anyway, I can tell you this, with differences like that it can destroy your relationship. I have family members who are liberal and we literally have nothing to talk about. How can you be really close to someone when they have liberal(aka socialist) beliefs? I could not do it, no way, no how.

Convert her or walk. The alternative will be 40-50 years of hell. Just imagine having children with Barbara Streisand.

Twenty years ago, it might have worked. The divisions are so deep now there is no possibility of it working.
Today I had an exchange with a friend from my childhood..a lifelong friend.

He is one of many of them that say Cheney should "Shut up and go away-Other ex-VP's do not bother people".

"GORE bothers ME a lot!"

It escalated. I ended the exchange with, "Your grandchildren will curse your memory and spit on your grave for what you have done to their country".

Strike that one off the list.

Just take a cold shower and run for your life.

It's like these people think they're in a civil war. There's no possible way you could ever feel affection for a LIBERAL -- that's just about treason, isn't it?

Now, full disclosure, almost everyone I've been romantic with I'd say is at least a moderate progressive, but I honestly never take politics into consideration. If anything, having someone with opposing views I think would make things more interesting -- I could learn a lot, probably.

These people are just obnoxious.

I can somewhat relate to how they feel.

Stefan Molyneaux, an anarcho-capitalist like me, once said that the one of the best questions to ask during a political discussion is: "Against me?"

People often propose government actions that will require widespread violence, fascism, etc. However, they often do not stop to think things through on a more personal level. The question "Against me?" encourages them to consider whether they would actually use violence against *you* personally to carry out their proposal.

If the person says yes, Molyneaux recommends refusing to participate any further, ending the discussion immediately, and walking away.

For me, it's even worse because both conservatives and liberals support evil policies. As a result of what they advocate, I will be threatened, robbed or enslaved, and if I refuse to cooperate I will be taken from my family, imprisoned, and possibly murdered.

Why would I want to interact with someone who thinks it's a good idea to use brutality against me? That's like a woman in an abusive relationship who doesn't leave. She gets the shit beat out of her but sticks around anyway. It doesn't make sense.

Unfortunately, almost every member of society to some extent supports the idea of carrying out beatings, theft, murder, and slavery under the guise of government. I have to tolerate this inhumane, anti-social, evil behavior at least somewhat; otherwise, I'd be a hermit.

Henry David Thoreau recognized this problem just as I have. He arrived at basically the same conclusion.

If you're only dating the anarcho-capitalist clique, where are you looking for women?

I mean, I'm a regular in the Ron Paul Facebook Group, and we have our fair share of hotties, but...

I've basically taken Thoreau's approach.

He encouraged people to resist as much as they felt comfortable with. Ultimately, though, your life is yours, so you should enjoy it and not feel obligated to fight the state all the time. Resist where you want to, but otherwise tolerate the state for what it is.

By extension, I would prefer to date only anarcho-capitalists, but this is not reasonable, so I will have to accept the fact that I will be dating people who support government violence.
